About
Staveley is a small town just 4 miles from Chesterfield and is perhaps best known for its industrial heritage. However, it was settled before the Norman Conquest and was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Staveleie', when it was owned by Ascuit Musard.Staveley later passed by marriage to the Frecheville family who built and fortified Staveley Hall, extended the church and founded a grammar school. During the Civil War, Sir John Frecheville was a loyal supporter of Charles I who is said to have stayed at Staveley Hall after the Battle of Marston Moor. Following financial problems in the late 17th Century, the Frechevilles sold Staveley to the Cavendish family who now own Chatsworth.
The Chesterfield Canal opened in 1777 and passed through Staveley on its way to the River Trent. The Barrows and Markhams took advantage of the new transport links by both canal and rail to exploit Staveley's wealth of coal and minerals. They founded the Staveley Coal and Iron Company in 1845.
The Church of St John the Baptist has an unusual feature called the Miners' Shrine. It has a carving by a local craftsman of St Michael, the patron saint of miners, a piece of coal from Ireland Colliery (the nearest of the local coal mines) and a miner's lamp which remains perpetually lit. Though nothing remains of the industry today, it is a reminder of the town's past association and dependence on coal mining.
