About
Top-level women’s cricket is coming to Chesterfield.
The women’s game has been booming in this country since England’s triumph in the 2017 World Cup with a huge increase in the number of women and girls playing, more television coverage and far bigger crowds at top matches.
The Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, named after the pioneering captain of the England team in the 1970s, is one of the top domestic competitions.
Eight teams, featuring the leading players in the country, compete in a 50-overs-a-side league before the top three go into a knock-out tournament. One of those sides – The Blaze – are based at Trent Bridge in Nottingham but they will play their home match against reigning champions Northern Diamonds at Chesterfield’s Queen’s Park on Friday, July 7.
The town-centre ground, widely recognised as one of the most picturesque in the world, staged warm-up games for the 2017 World Cup. But this will be the highest-profile competitive women’s match in its 129-year history.
It is a real coup for Chesterfield Cricket Club and recognition of the popularity of the Chesterfield Club and the Queen’s Park ground – and their record of staging big games – that they have been awarded such a prestigious fixture.
