Archaeological Way

About

The country park sits on the Archaeological Way and it has well surfaced limestone paths that wander through maturing woods and wildflower meadows.

This is a great place to look for wildlife. Skylarks and Sparrowhawks can often be spotted and, if you’re lucky, you might see the Welbeck Honey Buzzard. The two ponds in the Park attract dragonflies including the Emperor and the Black Tailed skimmer. Look in the pond for a sculpture made by local artist Phil Neale with children from Whaley School.

There are two waymarked trails around the park and, as you follow the longer route, look out for Art Along the Way. The Archaeological Way has inspired some fantastic pieces of community art which have become a sculpture trail in the Park.

Follow the trail to the viewpoint where you can look out at the pretty countryside, with Creswell, Langwith and Clowne in the distance. On a clear day, you can look across the Welbeck Estate to Lincoln Cathedral. It’s here, at the high point of the Park, that you’ll find ‘Top of the World’, created by artist Ewan Allinson and inspired by the area’s Stone Age past.

The shorter trail takes you down to the nature reserve with its small fields that are full of cowslips in the spring, and the ponds next to the Whaley Road car park.
