Revolution House

About

This is a circular walk that is 8 miles long and takes 4 to 6 hours to walk, although several shortcuts are available if you want a shorter walk. The route is waymarked by the cavalier’s head.

The walk starts at Revolution House, a pretty thatched cottage that played a part in the revolution of 1688 which brought Mary, the daughter of James II, and her Dutch husband William of Orange to the throne of England. The House is open on from Easter Saturday to last Sunday in September on Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 4pm and is free to enter. Inside, you’ll find a display of 17th century furniture and a changing exhibition on the first floor. A short film explains the story of the revolution and the role of the House.

The full route takes in all three of the pretty Handley villages, West, Middle and Nether before returning to Revolution House via Brearley Wetlands Local Nature Reserve, home to rare invertebrates and a great place to spot butterflies and birds.
