About
The 150th anniversary walk of Friends of Dronfield Station in partnership with Dronfield Footpaths and Bridleways Society uncovered how much the railway’s arrival to Dronfield changed this area.
Tracking down the industrial and railway heritage of this area we discover hidden secrets along the long dismantled Unstone branch line. It was fed by the rich black silkstone coal seam that was worked here. We will learn of a long-gone, huge rail manufacturing plant, beehive coke ovens, mine adits, engine sheds, miners cottages, abandoned mines, shafts and loading banks, all invigorated by the arrival of the railway in 1870.
Enjoy Unstone’s majestic viaduct and a splendid natural environment and lunch in the gardens of Ramshaw Lodge, one of the area’s finest historical properties.
