Markham Vale Mining Memorial


A walk around Markham Vale looking at its industrial past, including a stroll around the Walking Together mining memorial installation, commemorating the three mining disasters at the former Markham Colliery. We will also visit Poolsbrook Country Park.

Free tea and coffee at the end of the walk.
Historical commentary provided by members of the Markham Vale Heritage Group.
This is a circular walk.

Road Directions

From North Leave M1 motorway at junction 29A and take 1st exit off roundabout (Markham Road). At next roundabout take 3rd exit (Markham Lane). Follow road for 100 yards and Environment Centre is on left.

From South Leave M1 motorway at junction 29A and take 4th exit off roundabout (Markham Lane). Follow road under M1 and, at roundabout take 2nd exit. At next roundabout take 3rd exit (Markham Lane). Follow road for 100 yards and Environment Centre is on left.

From East Follow A617 to junction with M1 motorway. At roundabout take 4th exit (M1 North). Leave M1 at next junction (29A), then follow route from South.

From West Follow A619 to Chesterfield. At traffic light controlled roundabout (Matalan) select middle lane and take 3rd exit. Keep in left lane and, at traffic lights go straight on. At roundabout select right lane and take 3rd exit. At next roundabout (traffic light controlled), select left lane and take 2nd exit (A617). Follow road for approx 4 miles and, at roundabout take 1st exit (M1 North). Leave M1 at next junction (29A), then follow route from South
