Heritage Open Day - A Tour of Sutton Scarsdale Hall

About

With the kind permission of English Heritage, Paul Halksworth from the Arkwright Society will be leading this tour exploring the fascinating history of Sutton Scarsdale Hall.

Sutton Scarsdale Hall, a grandiose Georgian Mansion built between 1724 and 1729 by the architect Francis Smith of Warwick. He was commissioned by Nicholas Leke, 4th Earl of Scarsdale, to transform his ancestral, and already sizeable home. Sutton Hall, on completion, was undoubtedly one of the finest houses in Derbyshire: faced with ashlar stone and lavishly decorated and furnished, it enjoyed superb views across the Vale of Scarsdale to Bolsover Castle. After Leke's death in 1736, the Hall passed through various owners to Robert Arkwright, who bought it in 1824 for £216,000. The Hall remained in the Arkwright family until sold by William Arkwright in 1920.

Now an imposing shell of a building, there is still much to discover within.

Please meet at Sutton Scarsdale Hall.
