Exhibition: The Vikings

About

Discover what Viking life was like in this hands on exhibition for children.

Have a go at Viking writing and work out what your Viking name is. Could you be Bjorn Bloodaxe or Erika Dragonheart? All you need to know is your birthday. Try on a Viking costume and really feel the part.

Put together our Viking proverbs, matching the lines to make sense and have a go at our touchscreen quiz. How much have you learned about the Vikings from our exhibition.

There are lots of Viking crafts to have a go at including a loom where you can have a go at weaving and find out about the warp and the weft and the importance of weights. There’s also a small cardboard loom where you can weave on a small scale and take it home with you.

The Vikings also made cord on a ‘lucet’. This is quite complicated so ask the museum staff to help out. Why not have a go at making an amulet, or colour in a Viking shield or a Viking dragon while you’re here? We’ve also got a Viking puzzle sheet that you can have a go at.

Much easier but harder work, have a go at grinding wheat with the quern. Put together our jigsaw and discover our mystery items. Put your hand in the box and try to guess, just by touch, what’s hidden in there. It’s a modern item that you’ve probably seen in your own home but, once you’ve guessed what it is, can you find the Viking version on display?

Follow the Viking Trail and crack the runic code. We’ve hidden cartoon Vikings around the museum, each with their own name written on them in the runic alphabet. Can you find them all and translate their names?

How much time will you have to spend at the Museum to get round it all?
