Coal Aston Well Dressing under construction

About

Find out more about this ancient Derbyshire custom by watching the well dressers at work.

The design is drawn on paper then traced through onto a draughtsman’s drawing sheet. This is laid over the wet clay and taped securely to the frame. Small areas of drawing sheet are cut away with a craft knife to work directly on the clay, leaving the remaining in place to retain as much moisture as possible.

Any numbering and lettering is edged with small strips of wood while other shapes are not edged allowing the materials to create the boundaries. Only natural materials are used – plants, pebbles, shells, sheep’s’ wool, coal, seeds, cones, etc.
