Come and see the volunteers constructing the 2018 well dressings at Apperknowle and find out more about this ancient custom that’s unique to Derbyshire.

The dressing is set in clay, reconstituted from the previous year then natural materials are sourced locally.

The village dresses one well.

Road Directions

From North/South Leave M1 at junction 29 and take A617 to Chesterfield (approx. 4 miles). At traffic light controlled roundabout select middle lane and take 3rd exit. At next roundabout select right lane and take 3rd exit (A632). Turn immediately left into slip road to A61 (signposted Sheffield). Follow road to Tesco roundabout, select middle lane and take 2nd exit (A61). At next roundabout (Little Chef) select left lane and take 3rd exit (A61). Leave A61 by first slip road (Sheepbridge Trading Estate). At end of slip road turn left and, at roundabout , take 1st exit (B6057 signposted Unstone). Follow road to Unstone School and take first right turn after School (Crow Lane). Follow road passing Church and Unstone Grange and go straight on at crossroads (New Road). Follow road to T junction and Methodist Church is opposite.


From East Follow A617 to junction with M1 motorway and take 3rd exit (A617). Follow road to Chesterfield then follow route from North/South


From West Take A619 to Chesterfield. At traffic light controlled roundabout (Matalan), select middle lane and take 3rd exit. Stay in left lane and, at traffic lights go straight on. At roundabout, select middle lane and take 2nd exit (A632). Turn immediately left into slip road to A61 then follow route from North/South.
