Walking in Moss Valley

About

A 14 mile route encircling and celebrating the town of Dronfield with the Dronfield Barn project at its heart.

Commencing from Coal Aston, we begin with a short walk down into the beautiful Moss Valley and its associated woodlands. This is followed by a gentle climb to the tiny hamlet of Troway, now well known for its local honey.

We then cross a light aircraft landing strip, which has historical connections to the Sheffield steel industry, used in the heyday of Sheffield’s steel manufacturing. From there, we descend into the Drone Valley to cross the River Drone before climbing to a wonderful view point at the quaintly named Ouzle Bank. A section of delightful fields and woodlands follow then onto another excellent view point at Lees Wood where we shall take lunch.

Refreshed we proceed to another of the delightful hamlets that dot the route. This one, Cowley, includes one of the famous halls of Dronfield. Now to Cartledge and another of the halls before climbing to Holmesfield, which nestles on a ridge, with excellent views across the Cordwell Valley.

Descending through woodland we turn north east before walking along the edge of the manicured Dore and Totley golf course. More farmland follows, crossing the Bradway tunnel, to reach Bowshaw, on the southern edge of Sheffield, before turning south east for the final leg of our route to return to Coal Aston.
