A Walk on the Wildside

This walking route explores the beautiful Moss Valley, parts of which are Sites of Special Scientific Interest. The area once known for its sickle and scythe industry, is today a sanctuary for wildlife.

The ancient woodlands are home to many birds, mammals and wild flowers, such as bluebells, ransoms (wild garlic) and yellow archangel. These, in turn, attract many different insects, but especially butterflies and bees. Hedges provide excellent cover for many of our British birds like wrens, robins finches, sparrows… See how many you can spot.

There are many interesting things to see along the way, including the village of Ridgeway, a complex for scythe and sickle making at a site that’s over a thousand years old, the Seldom Seen Engine House and the WW2 Air Raid Decoy.

Two walks start near the Bridge Inn at Ford, an east loop, which is 4½ miles (allow 2 hours), and a west loop, which is 3½ miles (allow 1½ to 2 hours). Follow the waymarked blue arrows around both routes. Why not do both the routes in a day with a stop off at the Bridge Inn for lunch?

Scroll down the page for a leaflet and route map, but please note that the Ridgeway Craft Centre is now closed.
