The Victorian Garden Cemetery at Spital

About

Part of the Chesterfield Area Walking Festival

This short circular walk will start at the once overcrowded churchyards at Elder Yard and the Spire, follow the route taken by the Bishop of Lichfield and dignitaries in 1857 and walk out to the ’new’  garden cemetery opened at Spital. Prepare to be stunned by an amazing collection of Victorian memorials also graves to our war dead, beautiful flower carvings, and wowed by the view, original trees and path design. See the Grade II listed chapels we are campaigning to save. Return via the former site of Markham’s world renowned engineering works, a giant snail and Chesterfield Railway Station.

Meet at Elder Yard Unitarian Chapel, Elder Way, Chesterfield. S40 1UR
