Sutton Scarsdale Hall & its Fabulous History

About

Part of the Chesterfield Area Walking Festival

A journey around this majestic and historic ruin in the company of an accomplished historian who will weave spellbinding tales about the lives, loves and deaths of the rich and famous as well as those of the everyday folk who lived within the tranquil setting of this beautiful vale. Hear of the Civil War siege and imagine the roar of canons and the smell of gunpowder. Is Nicholas Leake, the inspiration of the Hall, really the basis for Hogarth’s ‘Rakes Progress’ and what is the connection with Lawrence’s ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’? The hall is currently shrouded in scaffolding so there will be a digital presentation in the church at the end of the walk, where refreshments will also be available
