About
Enjoy a walk to view some of the Cruck barns and Halls in the area using a route designed to visit some of the more oddly named hamlets and rolling country on the Northwestern side of Chesterfield with a hidden wooded valley for good measure.
In the distant past this area was somewhat renowned for its many Halls that in the 17 and 18 hundreds would be almost palatial living. Although some, like Cutthorpe and Barlow Woodseats, (Manorial from 1086), were built more in the traditional style of a grand residence, many of the other Halls appear more as grand farm houses a simple statement of wealth and success.
Some of the Halls include Cruck Barns as part of the outbuildings, this walk visits several of these.
The walk leaves Linacre passing over the wall of the middle of three dams, a lengthy stretch of countryside walking leads to the first of the halls at Frith Hall. Basically a farm house, this has a cruck barn with a restored roof which is still in constant use today.
We then head north to pass over the wall of the Linacre top dam to reach Pratthall followed by more walking through open farmland will lead us to what is believed to be the longest cruck barn in Derbyshire at Barlow Woodseats.
We shall then descend into a deep wooded valley to reach Unthank Hall where a short detour will reveal a true delight; a privately maintained cruck barn including a very old set of doors. The return journey continues the theme of open farmland and secluded Hamlets, pausing at the last of the halls at Cutthorpe before returning to Linacre through its delightful woods.
