About
Join volunteers from Transition Chesterfield for a stroll around urban bridges in and near the town centre and with views of rivers often hidden from sight.
The walk includes examples of Transition’s Walk of Fame and Shame for local pedestrian infrastructure and discuss ongoing efforts to promote walking as a sustainable travel option.
This is a circular walk from the town centre mainly on car free paths or quiet pavements but hardly ever out of sight of the Crooked Spire. We will walk over a number of pedestrian bridges crossing roads and rivers.
From the churchyard, we will traverse 2 bridges on our way across town to Queen’s Park, passing the Barbara Hepworth sculpture (Rosewall or Curved Reclining Form). The Curly Wurly Bridge will give us different views of the Cooked Spire and the Hornsbridge roundabout sculpture (Growth). We will walk along Clayton Street near the confluence of the Hipper and Rother rivers. We then follow the riverside path to the Snail sculpture (Mollusc) and bottom of Crow Lane near the Railway Station.
Walking past Tapton Terrace and along Holbeck Close will take us to the Cuckoo Way beside the River Rother and to the edge of the Waterside housing development. From there, we walk over the pedestrian bridge over the A61 then follow the shared walk & cycle route past the Chesterfield College and on to Brewery Street and back to the churchyard.
