Woodland covered in bluebells

About

Join volunteers from Transition Chesterfield for an afternoon walk that takes in nature that is right on our doorstep. A lovely peaceful, mostly car free, loop walk, through beautiful beech and bluebell woodland, parkland and along the canal towpath.

Our route starts beside the lock at Hollingwood Hub, where there is a lovely café and a public toilet.  If the weather is good, why not come early and enjoy lunch at the café?

We will start by following the canal towpath to Chesterfield’s Tapton Lock Visitor Centre (which has a toilet), passing by Bluebank Pools on a beautiful stretch of the canal.

From the visitor centre, we will continue a short way alongside the canal and then cross the road and the railway and into Tapton Park.  We will walk up past the lovely Tapton House, one time home of “the father of the railway” George Stephenson, through the woods and across the fields to Brimington.

After walking along the pavement for about 200m, we turn down beside Brimington Common and into the wonderful oasis of West Wood where, with luck, the bluebells may still be flowering.  The wood is incredibly peaceful and we will walk its length before entering Ringwood Park and walking along beside the lake.  From here it’s an easy 400 metres back along the pavement down Troughbrook Road to return us to our starting point.
