Holy Trinity Church, Chesterfield

About

George Stephenson, 'Father of the Railways' is buried in a vault within the Church. There are four memorials to him, one of which is the fine East window, given in memory of his father by Robert Stephenson. The Church is open by appointment only.

George Stephenson moved to Chesterfield in 1838 during the building of the North Midland Railway. Gangs of navvies tunnelling under Clay Cross uncovered massive deposits of coal and iron ore and, in 1840, George launched the Clay Cross Company. His other interests included gardening and he developed a way of growing straight cucumbers more than 100 years before EU regulations! He died at his Chesterfield home in 1848.
