Chesterfield Barnett Observatory

Chesterfield Barnett Observatory

Hastings Close,
S41 8RH

When the Observatory was built in 1960, it housed the largest amateur telescope in Europe. The telescope is still in use today and is the showcase of the Chesterfield Astronomical Society who meet at the observatory every Friday evening.

In modern times, the Observatory has gone through major changes and the facilities are an impressive 21st Century affair with the addition of a portable but powerful telescope, a solar scope for viewing the sun, a radio telescope used to capture meteor data and high-tech computer connectivity providing live feeds to a large monitor in the attached lecture room.

No matter what your age, whether you are new to astronomy or an old hand, you can be sure of a warm welcome at the observatory. You don’t need to be a member to visit us but we do ask for a small donation to help keep this amazing place maintained.

The lecture room has wheelchair friendly access and includes a disabled toilet.
Group bookings welcome by advance notice.
