Details

Well dressing is an ancient custom that’s only found in or around the borders of Derbyshire.

Chesterfield is one of the five well dressings chosen to display this ephemeral and beautiful art from at the Royal Horticultural Society’s first ever Chatsworth Flower Show (7-11 June 2017).

At its simplest, well dressing is the art of decorating springs and wells with pictures made from natural materials. This, however, doesn’t explain how well dressers make such intricate and detailed pictures using only what nature provides – leaves, flowers, berries…Find out how a well dressing is made by watching the well dressers at work. The well dressers are happy to answer any questions about well dressing, the materials they use and why they well dress.

Our theme this year is based on the RHS Show theme ‘Design Revolutionaries’. We are showing Joseph Paxton at the Lily Pond at Chatsworth (where Joseph was Head Gardener), with his daughter Annie standing on a leaf of the giant waterlily ‘Victoria Amazonica’. It was the strength and internal structure of this leaf that gave Paxton the inspiration for the design of the Great Conservatory at Chatsworth and, a few years later, Crystal Palace. Although the Great Conservatory has been demolished, the RHS will be re-creating it for the Show.

Watch us at work in the Pavements Shopping Centre in Chesterfield. We will finish the dressing late on Saturday before taking it to the Show on Sunday.
