Pilsley is surrounded by pretty Derbyshire countryside, which can come as a surprise when you learn that this was a colliery village. The mine at Pilsley was sunk in the 19th Century, along with coal mines nearby at Tibshelf, Holmewood, Williamthorpe and Grassmoor. The Great Central Railway Company opened a line to serve all five of these mines.
Pilsley Colliery closed in 1957 and, by 1970, all the other local pits had gone, along with the railway line. Today, the land has been reclaimed and the Five Pits Trail links all these former pit sites along the track of the old railway line. There are several places to join the trail and one of the main points is in Pilsley.
