The village of Coal Aston is now almost a part of the larger town of Dronfield. Coal Aston sits on a ridge overlooking Sheffield and Dronfield, bounded on the south by Frith Wood.
This ancient woodland shows evidence of coppicing carried out generations ago. Trees were cut close to the ground and, from the stump, grew a number of shoots which gave a higher yield of wood. This could then be used to make charcoal for the early iron and steel industries in the Moss Valley.
As you might expect from the name of the village, a number of coal mines were sunk in the area, and open casting also took place in the 1950s. Nothing remains today of the coal industry and Coal Aston is better known now for its pubs - especially the Royal Oak. Known locally as 'the pond' the Royal Oak is the place where men from the village play a game called 'Hook and Hoop', although nationally its name is 'Ringing the Bull'. Players swing a metal hook, attached to the roof by a length of string, towards a hook fixed to the wall.
