This ancient custom is unique to Derbyshire. In Ashford-in-the-Water, 6 wells are dressed on different themes.

Well Locations

Top Pump Well – near car park entrance, in centre of Buxton Road at its junction with Fennel Street
Children’s Well – on footpath that links Buxton Road with Fennel Street a few metres east of the first well, next to a shop
Sheepwash Well – at corner of Church Street near Sheepwash Bridge
Church Street Well – further along Church Street, set into a wall on south side of road
Greaves Lane Well – on east side of Greaves Lane (the road leading to Monsal Head) a short distance from its junction with Church Street
Little Well – further up Greaves Lane, opposite the junction with Hill Cross.

Blessing Service at Trinity Church on Sunday 11th June at 3pm 2017 followed by procession around the wells. Patronal Festival and Holy Communion at 9.45am on the same day.

There are various other events happening during the Well Dressing week:
Sheep Washing Demonstration on Saturday 10th June at 3pm at the Sheep Wash Bridge

Scarecrow Competition – The theme for this year is Nursery Rhymes and Pantomimes. Scarecrows will be on display around the village and the winner will be announced at the Sheep Washing.

There will also be Morris Dancers on 11th June at 12 noon at the War Memorial Institute.

On Friday 16th June there will be a talk with slides entitled ‘A Short History of Droving’ at the Holy Trinity Church by John Winkworth-Smith. Tickets for this will be £6.00 and will be available on the door.

There will also be an Art Exhibition in the Old School daily from 10am until 5pm and at the War Memorial Institute.

Refreshments will be available daily from 10am until 5pm in the Old School.
