An exhibition showcasing some of the great objects in the collection showing animals and looking at animals in the town's past.

Animals always draw a crowd. The excitement of the circus has been part of entertainment in the town for around 150 years with performing animals forming a key part of the show.

Meet some of the animals who worked for us. Do you know why canaries went down coal mines? Do you remember Captain, the shire horse who worked at Chesterfield Market? Did you have a ride on one of the donkeys in Queen’s Park?

Animals have been an inspiration to potters for thousands of years, and the potteries in Chesterfield were no exception. Discover our pottery menagerie and the detailed moulds made by our talented potters.

There’s lots to do at the exhibition. Have go at identifying animals by the sounds they make. Choose which animal you would like to be and colour in the mask to wear. Follow our footprint trail and identify animals by the tracks they leave behind.
