Highlights of the 2010 Chesterfield Festival
Chesterfield Arts and Market Festival is set to go ahead for the 7th year in the October Half Term. The event will run from Thursday 28 to Saturday 30 October 2010 and offers events for everyone.
This year's highlights include the nation's favourite orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic, young Iranian stand-up comic Shappi Khorsandi, winners of the Best Group at the 2010 BBC Folk Awards, Lau, the Chesterfield CAMRA Market Beer Festival and, everyone's favourite, the Garden of Light.
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing Mozart's Violin Concerto number 1 and Beethoven's Symphony number 4, as well as the brilliant Introduction and Allegro by Elgar.
Finalist in the BBC New Comedy Awards 2000 Shappi Khorsandi will bring her unique take on comedy to the Pomegranate Theatre. This Iranian female comedian has been seen on TV in ‘Live at the Apollo', ‘Friday Night with Jonathan Ross' and ‘8 Out of 10 Cats'.
If you enjoyed the Seth Lakeman concert last year, you really shouldn't miss Lau, three
highly creative individuals with their own unique style of music. Lau won the Best Group in the 2010 BBC Folk Awards for the second year running.
The Chesterfield CAMRA Market Beer Festival takes place on Friday and Saturday in the Market Hall. Go to one of the day time sessions and have a ploughman's lunch prepared by Davidson's Cheese Factor to go with your beer. This year there will be ...
The Garden of Light sees Queen's Park come alive with coloured lights, illuminated entertainers and a traditional fun fair, with fireworks every night.
Concerts in the‘Crooked Spire' Church are a favourite feature of the Festival and, this year, the highlight is Fiori Musicali and ‘Vivaldi's World' on Friday. Thursday sees a return of influential Irish harpist Máire Ní Chathasaigh and guitar wizard Chris Newman, while Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir presents ‘Make a Joyful Noise' on Saturday.
As well as all this, the Pomegranate is featuring ‘Austen's Women' a one woman show presenting all of Jane Austen's most famous heroines, and Rebel Cell, an irreverent political comedy told in rap. The Winding Wheel is playing host to Martin Bell and the Library is hosting a children's show. Jonty Hearnden is coming to the Flea Market on Thursday and the Vikings are coming to Chesterfield Museum.
Along with the general markets and a Continental market, lectures and ghost walks, a sausage competition and lots more that there just isn't room for, this year's Festival is sure to be the biggest event yet!
